Frequently asked questions

What is the QST rate in 2026?

The QST rate is 9.975%. It has been unchanged since January 1, 2013. Combined with the 5% GST, the total rate that applies in Québec is 14.975%.

Is QST charged on top of GST?

No. Since 2013, GST and QST are both calculated on the pre-tax amount. There is no longer any tax-on-tax effect. On $100 you get $5.00 of GST and $9.98 of QST, for a total of $114.98.

How do I find the pre-tax amount from a total?

Divide the total by 1.14975. Our reverse sales tax calculator does it automatically and breaks out the GST and QST included in the amount.

How should GST and QST be rounded?

Each tax is rounded separately to two decimals. If the third decimal is less than 5, round down; if it is 5 or more, round up. This calculator applies that rule.

Do I have to charge GST and QST?

You must register for the GST and QST files as soon as your taxable supplies exceed $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters. Below that threshold you are considered a small supplier and registration is optional. Our threshold checker answers the question from your own figures.
