How to take a payment: card, cash, Interac

2 min read

Taking a payment in the InnoBook POS app happens in three moves: build the cart, choose the service type, then take payment by Card (Stripe terminal), Cash or Interac. The receipt can then be printed or sent by email or SMS. This is the Revenu Québec (MEV-WEB) certified sales path.

What you’ll need #

  • The POS add-on and POS access for your user
  • The app open and signed in to the right company
  • Items with prices and categories (see “Set up your POS”)
  • A connected Stripe reader for card payments; a printer for a paper receipt (optional)

Steps #

  1. Build the cart

Tap a category, then the products to add them. Each line shows under Ordered Items; tap the quantity chip (e.g. “2×”) to open the number pad, or swipe a line right to remove it. To go faster, use Search / Scan: type a name or scan a barcode and the item is added to the cart.

  2. Choose the service type

In the summary, a selector lets you choose between Counter (default) and Platform (an order through a digital delivery platform). This choice is sent to Revenu Québec with the sale; leave it on Counter for a normal in-store sale.

  3. Add tip, delivery or discount (if needed)

Three buttons under the selector each open their own dialog: Tip (10/15/18/20% presets or a manual amount; the Server / tip recipient name is required), Delivery (delivery fee) and Discount (tabs Promo code, Available discounts and Manual discount, with a Before tax option).

  4. Check the totals

The summary shows the Subtotal, the Tax (GST 5% + QST 9.975% per each item’s configuration) and the Total. Discount, delivery and tip lines are added in. Confirm the amount before taking payment.

  5. Take the payment

Card: tap the large Card button, present the Stripe terminal to the customer and let the transaction complete. Cash: tap Cash, enter the amount received, tap Calculate — the Money back shows (rounded to the nearest 5¢) — then Apply Payment. Interac: tap Interact, present the terminal (option to add a tip), then Proceed.

  6. Send or print the receipt

After payment, the Payment Successful dialog shows the receipt number. Tap Print Receipt, or enter an email/number and tap Email or SMS to send it to the customer. Tap Done to return to the register — the cart clears for the next sale.

Tips & edge cases #

  • Cash change is rounded to the nearest 5¢ (Canadian cash-rounding rule).
  • A tip requires a Server / tip recipient (Revenu Québec requirement); the app won’t continue without a name.
  • To start over, tap Reset all; to remove a line, swipe it right.
  • The More actions menu groups Create Order, Left Without Paying and Cancel sale (transmits a cancellation to Revenu Québec and clears the cart).
  • If a discount becomes invalid between display and payment, a specific message appears and the totals refresh — The totals were refreshed — please review and try again — before you retry.

Frequently asked questions #

How is cash change calculated? #

You enter the amount received and tap “Calculate”. The app subtracts the total and rounds “Money back” to the nearest 5¢, per the Canadian cash-rounding rule.

Can I text the receipt? #

Yes. On the “Payment Successful” screen, enter a phone number and tap SMS. You can also send by Email or print the receipt.

Is the discount applied before or after tax? #

In the manual discount, the “Before tax” switch controls whether the discount is applied before or after tax is calculated.

Should I take payment in the app or on the web register? #

In Québec (MEV-WEB), payments are taken in the certified POS app. The web register is for management.
